Every 10 years the United States census bureau conducts a major census survey of the population in the US. Because it is such a big undertaking, the Census bureau hires thousands of temporary employees to help run the census. A lot of the work actually starts in 2009, so the bureau will have everything in place. So if you're looking for a temporary job with the Census Bureau, now is the time to start looking into it.
The Census Bureau will be hiring for all kinds of positions and they are looking for English speakers and bilingual speakers. The Census bureau need supervisors and crew leaders and office staff. But the biggest hiring effort will be for enumerators. Enumerators are the people who go out into the field, visiting the homes of people who never got around to turning in their Census forms. They also verify that the address lists of the census are correct.
For the most part, enumerators are hired to work in their own neighborhoods. So you won't be sent off to some part of your state that you don't know very well. You will likely still need to have access to a reliable vehicle to get around though.
